Tassie: the Overland Track

Cradle Mountain Trek

The Overland Track is a magical place on Earth.  It is located in Tasmania’s World Heritage Area.  It is approximately 82 kms of tricky trail with lots of mud, roots and rock.  Most people visiting the Track take 4-6 days and trek it, because the sights are worth taking the time to explore and enjoy.  This is what I decided to do, and booked the 6-day adventure walk with Cradle Mountain Huts http://www.cradlehuts.com.au/.   It was very well-organized with knowledgeable leaders and good food.  Recommended!

For the hardcore runners, there is a one day ultra that traverses the Track held each February, known as Cradle Mountain Run.  More information can be found at  http://www.cradlemtnrun.asn.au/.  Keep in mind this event is limited to 60 people and potential participants are evaluated before making it into the event.

The Overland Track starts near the beautiful Cradle Mountain.  It is worth climbing the mountain on a clear day for the view, plus the climb is dangerously fun.  If you are careful of your footing and hand holds, then safety is on your side.  The Track traverses several microclimates, bringing unique vegetation along the way.

Oh…watch out for the mud.  It can be so deep that you think you might never make it out.  But, it is also very fun.
